Spring Music “Newsies” Set for April

Ruby Wray, Staff Writer

Despite student desires for a prolonged winter break, second semester has begun and with that comes the spring musical. This school year’s 2019-2020 production is Disney’s “Newsies.”

Based on the 1992 film, “Newsies” is set in the boroughs of New York City where Jack Kelley, played by Joe Mertins, is a homeless newspaper boy and recognized leader of the “Newsies.” He and his paperboy allies rough it on the streets struggling to survive. When the notoriously corrupt Joseph Pulitzer, played by Jack Wing, increases the paper prices drastically to damper the newsie’s pay, Jack takes matters into his own hands and starts a strike. With the help of Katherine Plumber (Greta Mann), a sympathetic journalist, the exploited Newsies must stop the unjust pay by the powerful publishers of New York City.

“Newsies” is directed by Elizabeth Meyers and Nicholas Djernes. The performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 23-25, at 7 p.m. in Westside Middle School’s Performing Arts Center.
