Two Poems by Evlyn Jasa

Pretty girl

you try in school

you have good grades

you’re smart

except when you google how many calories are in your breakfast

you’re a pretty girl

pretty skinny girl

pretty lying girl

a number on a scale does not define your worth

the circumference of your waist doesn’t lessen your value

you’re a pretty girl

pretty hurting girl

pretty dying girl

You are the sun to my flower

Your smile brings me light

I stand taller when you are here

My colors grow more vibrant

Except when the light fades

I fall and begin to wilt

Each time I miss you more

Please don’t leave

Don’t take my sunshine away
